Can you drink honey after taking medicine?

Actually, it is okay to drink honey after taking a pill or medicine, as long as the honey is pure without any additives and chemicals. However, you should give a break between taking the medicine and honey for about 30 minutes. This is done to avoid drug complications with natural herbal ingredients that can increase the risk of disease

Honey can actually increase the risk of bleeding when combined directly with certain thyroid medications and supplements. Several cases have reported that the occurrence of bleeding is due to the honey content which can interfere with the body’s system in producing herbal medicinal contents which impair the function of liver enzymes.

Drinking honey can increase the risk of bleeding when taken together with medications that increase the risk of bleeding. Some examples of drugs include aspirin , anticoagulants (blood thinners), warfarin or heparin drugs, anti-platelet drugs such as clopidogrel, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen.

Avoid mixing or using honey as follows

  • Honey should not be mixed with hot food.
  • Honey should not be cooked or heated.
  • Honey should not be consumed when you are working in a hot environment where you are often exposed to excess heat.
  • Honey should not be mixed with rainwater, hot and spicy foods, and fermented drinks such as whiskey, rum, and yogurt.
  • Honey includes nectar from various flowers which may be poisonous. When honey is mixed with hot and spicy foods, its toxic properties can increase and cause imbalances in the body’s enzymes and human blood flow.
