The Importance of High Fiber Content in the Soya Formula

One of the advantages of soy-based formulas is that they contain fiber. Fiber has an important role in the body so there are a number of recommendations that need to be fulfilled every day. What exactly is the function of fiber in the body? Consider the following explanation.

Why does your little one need to consume fiber every day?

Some of the benefits of consuming fiber that you need to know include:

  • Helps the digestive system function
  • Shorten the transit time of food residues (feces) so that they are disposed of more quickly
  • Improve stool quality
  • Reducing the risk of diarrhea

Soya formula milk certainly contains fiber. However, you need to know that there are two types of fiber , namely, soluble and insoluble fiber.

Soluble fiber is known to help lower cholesterol and maintain blood sugar levels. Meanwhile, insoluble fiber can help prevent constipation.

Some children experience digestive problems or disorders such as constipation. For that, fiber is needed to maintain health and prevent digestive disorders.

Fiber sources also generally contain vitamins and minerals, such as fruits and vegetables. Apart from food, your little one can also get fiber from soy formula.

The role of fiber content in soy formula

In general, soy formula is given to children who have medical conditions, such as cow’s milk allergy or lactose intolerance. Some mothers also provide soy formula when their families adopt a healthy lifestyle.

However, behind these various reasons, whether you realize it or not, the fiber content in the soy formula is really needed by your little one. Every day, your little one needs fiber intake with the recommended 2019 RDA based on age , namely:

  • 1-3 years old ; as much as 19 grams
  • 4-6 years old ; as much as 20 grams
  • 7-9 years old ; as much as 23 grams

Food alone is sometimes not enough to meet a child’s daily fiber needs.

One thing to consider when choosing a soy formula is its content. There is a soy-based formula with high fiber content as well as soy protein isolate.

Quoted from a scientific article published by the University of Indonesia , considering that the fiber content in ordinary soy milk is not too high, it is advisable to choose a formula with soy protein isolate.

In addition, the article also states that soy formula is a safe choice as a source of nutrition that children need. Growth and development, bone health , metabolism, immune system and nervous function in children who drink soy formula are not much different from children who drink cow’s milk-based formula.

Fiber is important for maintaining digestive health, such as prebiotics which are able to maintain the growth of good bacteria in the digestive system so that defecation is smooth. With sufficient fiber intake, the child’s immune system can also work optimally because the absorption of several types of minerals can be helped.

Then, because it has gone through the process of adding nutrients, the high-fiber soy formula also contains various vitamins and minerals. Soya milk is also stated as the only source of vegetable protein that has complete amino acids (such as omega-3 and 6).

Soya formula milk which is high in fiber is a solution if your little one often experiences digestive problems. With a healthy digestive tract, the risk of digestive problems will decrease as well as have a positive impact on the body’s resistance to various other diseases.

Mothers should be careful in choosing healthy and balanced food sources, including when determining formula milk, so that their little one’s daily nutritional needs can be met.

Another source of fiber for children

The recommended fiber dose for children from Permenkes No. 75 of 2013 concerning the recommended Nutritional Adequacy Rate, which is around 2-3 cups of fruit or vegetables per day.

As a guide, here are some types of fiber source foods that can be given to your little one

  • Fruits such as apples, oranges, bananas, pumpkin, and pears
  • Vegetables such as carrots, broccoli and potatoes
  • Nuts such as peas, green peas, and almonds

Soya milk with protein isolate is enriched with various additional nutrients that children need. For that, choose the right formula milk and make sure it is enriched with fiber to maintain and improve the health of the child’s digestive tract.
